Liberals in Kosovo sharpen their profile

Political consultations in Prishtina, 15.-16.04.2008

In Kosovo the daily political routine has changed after the proclamation independence. After the response to the most prominent issue about status, the eyes of the public are directed with growing expectations towards the political actors in the country.
The political forces with liberal orientation or these which make efforts to have such orientation have realized that they should develop pragmatically and they should differentiate from other political parties in order to be able to play an independent role in Kosovo in the future.

The political forces with liberal orientation or these which make efforts to have such orientation have realized that they should develop pragmatically and they should differentiate from other political parties in order to be able to play an independent role in Kosovo in the future.

The project office of the Friedrich-Naumann foundation for Freedom in Prishtina has been supporting the liberal and liberally oriented political parties in Kosovo for a long time in their efforts towards a clear political image. In this context consultations for the Liberal Party of Kosovo (PLK) and the Alliance for a New Kosovo (AAK) took place on 15. and 16. May 2008. The establishment of a liberal policy and the further movement of Kosovo towards the EU were the main focus of both events. The exchange of practical experience with Dr. Steltemeier about FDP’s work in Germany was very important for understanding between the participants.

welfare Gjergj Dedaj took part in the consultation with PLK on 15. May. The PLK was founded in 1991 and is member of the ELDR and Liberal International. 24 participants discussed the options for the implementation of liberal political concepts in Kosovo.

Seminar with AAK
The second consultation with representatives of the AAK took place in Prishtina on 16. May. The party was founded in 2000 and has participated in governance since the country’s institutions became independent from Serbia. Since the last parliamentary elections on 17.11.2007. the AAK has been a part of the oppositions with 13 seats in parliament. The former minister of justice, Jonuz Salihaj, was among the participants who were all interested in the strenghts and challenges of liberal parties in Europe. Dr. Steltemeier made a presentation on the „Wiesbaden principles – for the liberal society“. This attracted the attention of the participants. Afterwards there was a lively discussion on the acceptance of liberal values in the kosovar society.
