Fighting overregulation – World-famous US economist Niskanen lectures in Prague

The Research Department Director of Cato Institutes in Washington, William A. Niskanen, warned against the increasing tendency for overregulation. In a lecture with the title The Effects of Government Regulation - a Lesson from American Experience the respected economist and former head of the economic adviser team of president Ronald Reagan presented in Prague his more than 35 years long scientific work and also his practical experience in the regulation. Niskanen referred also to the instability of the current social and health insurance systems, as he went into details regarding the reasons for the enormous intensification of the regulation in the health service, security and the environment.

In Niskanen´s opinion a solution for the overregulation would be possible, if the independent and well-founded evaluation of the material costs of all regulations becomes compulsory not only at their acceptance, but also during the process of their validity. By means of this institutional change and also by means of political, and not administrative decisions the efficiency of American and the European economies could be increased in Niskanen´s opinion.
